Established in 1978, SAT (now Toscana Aeroporti S.p.A.) started operating the Galileo Galilei Airport on July 1, 1980, when the company through a partial concession, took replace of the Consorzio Aerostazione Civile of Pisa.

In 1994 a reorganization process was launched within the company and in 1995 a few private partners, Società Industriale Partecipazioni S.p.A. (SIP) and Piaggio & C. S.p.A entered the company's share capital. These companies later relinquished their shares of SAT (now Toscana Aeroporti S.p.A.).

In June 1998, the low cost carrier Ryanair started operating at Galilei Airport. Thanks also to new routes opened by Ryanair, Galileo Galilei Airport passenger traffic has grown significantly, from about 1 million in 1997 up to 4.7 million in 2014, enabling Pisa Airport to maintain the tenth place (achieved in 2013) in the national airports rank in terms of passenger traffic.
